Economies in Asia appear to be rebounding, but for most for most of the world’s economies the state of recovery appears fragile, according to a recent report by the IMF. In this climate of cautious optimism, companies continue to look for ways to manage the costs of their global mobility programs.
Because of lower costs, “local-plus” assignments and outright localization of expatriates have always presented tempting options to companies. In fact, a recent survey of global mobility practices indicates that 60% of the participating companies had experienced an increase in the number of employees placed on local hire status in the Asia-Pacific region during the past two years. And, 70% of these same companies indicated that they expect to see an increase the number of employees placed on local-hire status in the Asia-Pacific region in the next two years.
This one-day seminar, co-sponsored by AIRINC and Hewitt Greater China, will feature AIRINC, Hewitt, and corporate speakers. The seminar will explore how to structure compensation and benefits packages for foreign employees who are placed on local-plus packages. Open discussion and sharing of best practices will be encouraged throughout the seminar.
Topics we plan to cover include:
- When does it make sense to use a local-plus package? When should an expatriate be localized?
- What are the typical components of local-plus package?
- How should the local-plus compensation package be structured and what are the options?
- What are the key benefits issues that need to be considered?
- How do you handle transferring employees from high wage to low wage countries on a local-plus or local basis?
- What are the pros and cons of using a host-based approach for international assignees?
- What are recent trends in local-plus and localization practices?
