Year 2008-09 witnessed the most turbulent times in Chinese business history in the past two decades. Most industries and businesses were hit by the global economic crisis, and they responded in various ways to contain cost and to improve efficiency. Starting in the latter half of 2009, signs of recovery started to emerge, though the million dollar question of whether this economic crisis is recovering from its V-shape or is going through a double dip remains unanswered.
Despite the uncertainties, many companies are still targeting China as their strategic future growth market. China will continue to receive an increasing number of Expatriates, China Hires and Chinese Returnees coming to work for new and expanded entities in China. These foreign and Chinese overseas nationals will form a powerful supplement to the still-constrained quality of the local talent pool. The increasing diversity of this population also makes the rewards policies for this group increasingly complicated. Managing expatriates, just like managing other employees, is affected by pressure for more effective cost controls, so localization continues to stay high on managers’ agendas.
The 2009 Expatriate, China Hire & Returnee Compensation & Benefits Study provides the latest research and survey findings on these topics, covering key issues and trends in expatriate cash compensation, benefits, and the localization of packages as well as of people. The study also provides additional information, such as a forecast for expatriate population change in China and information about new legislation on social security contributions for expatriates in China.
Hewitt has the largest compensation and benefits database for Expatriates, China Hires and Returnees in China. In 2009, about 180 companies participated the study, with participant companies coming from a variety of countries, including the USA, Canada, France, and more. More than 15 industries are covered in the study, including Hi-tech, Auto, Consumer Goods, Machinery, Chemical, Insurance, Pharmaceuticals, Real Estate, and a number of others.
