Rent and Utilities Guidelines

Appropriate housing is important to the well-being of a relocating family. It is also one of the most costly components of an expatriate compensation package. For both of these reasons, housing is a critical element for any expatriate assignment.

AIRINC provides comprehensive data for host city rent and utilities expenditures throughout the world. Our staff interviews local realtors, relocation professionals, and market experts to assess rental conditions in neighborhoods preferred by expatriates and their families. In order to ensure equivalent accommodations across locations, we work closely with client companies to assign standards of housing at relevant salary ranges or job levels.

AIRINC offers expatriate rent and/or utilities guidelines in a wide variety of formats. Clients can obtain information for one transferee as part of an Individual Report or access data through the new International Housing Guide for one or more expatriates in a given location. Rent and utilities guidelines can be expressed in relation to either job level and family size, or salary and family size.

The International Housing Guide is a web-based application that helps companies manage their international housing programs more efficiently. It combines client-specific housing guidelines with general market data to help companies:

• understand the type of housing available for a specific rental budget;
• observe the trade-offs in the housing market between cost, residential size, and quality of housing;
• validate feedback from expatriates and destination service providers regarding housing costs at the assignment location;
• identify time-to-time changes by referencing archived housing recommendations.

There are three main sections in the International Housing Guide:

1. Location Profiles: general market information, including rental grid and map.
2. Housing Charts & Tables: information that can be customized for each client, including rent chart and standards.
3. Extended Reports: An expatriate-specific individual recommendation, plus comprehensive housing report information for the transferee and destination service provider.
